Maria Fernanda Cabrera

Nationality: Guatemala
Organization Name: Sisu Guatemala
Impact Region: LATAM
About the Social Business: Design, manufacture and commercialization of products made and embroidered by hand by people deprived of their liberty, in order to dignify their lives, giving them a second chance without prejudice.
About the Y&Y Fellow: María Fernanda is Guatemalan and the oldest of 3 sisters. She studied Industrial Design and always stood out for her creativity and empathy. In 2015 she had the opportunity to learn about the reality of the prisons in her country and was impressed by the situation experienced by both people deprived of liberty and their families. Since then, a question has been installed in her life: how, through design, could she offer them a job opportunity, reintegration and an improvement in their conditions? Thus, a few years later, in September 2018, Sisu Guatemala was born. “Sisu” is a concept in Finnish that means “seeing beyond problems.” Since then, she has dedicated herself to designing and innovating the processes that allow people deprived of liberty - specially women- to work and be able to market their products through social networks.
