About the Social Business: Her Active is an activewear company that helps women of all fitness levels to get active and give back in style by creating technical apparel with an environmental and social conscious rooted in empowering girls and women in South Africa. Each pair of leggings sold provides dignified employment for women living in marginalised communities, and contributes towards giving more girls the power to play. Her Active partners with ActivateHer, a sports development focused nonprofit for girls which leverages sports as a catalyst to empower girls and young women, identifying the power of sport and play to further physical and mental development.
About the Y&Y Fellow: Adele Bruggeman is the founding director of Her Active, a female focused sports development initiative based in Cape Town, South Africa. Growing up on the sports fields, Adele spent her childhood playing soccer and lacrosse, where she set early aspirations of being a college athlete. Using this as motivation to achieve both on and off the field, Adele went on to play lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame. Upon graduation, she moved to South Africa to live and work at a rural children's home, and then went on to study further at the University of Cape Town, where she received her Masters in Social Policy in Management. With Adele's passion for female empowerment, international development and sports, Her Active was founded as a means to give girls sporting opportunities that can enhance gender equality, boost self-esteem and drive economic opportunities for young women.
ActivateHer currently hosts weekly movement classes for pre-primary girls and activation sports classes for primary school girls over school holidays. ActivateHer is also in the process of developing an activewear line, which will use African inspired prints to emphasize the beauty in being African and active, while also creating employment opportunities for local women and integrating financial sustainability into ActivateHer’s funding model. ActivateHer is also seeking to expand into a social enterprise female focused gym.
