Sobre el Y&Y Fellow: Morgan Kret is the Founder of Geometric and an education and international development professional from Washington D.C. Her career took her to Ghana in 2013 after completing her Masters’ degree in Education from American University. Throughout five years of working in education sector reform, teacher training, and gender equality with organizations like the Varkey Foundation in Ghana, she saw that improved access to school and learning was not enough to prepare kids for the workforce. Simultaneously, her love of contemporary, Ghanaian fashion led her to work with tailors and metalsmiths to discover new ways of incorporating West African design into her daily style. Geometric evolved out of these passions as a way to promote West African art forms and give work as a solution to building the bridge between education and sustainable employment. Morgan is lucky to have grown up within a creative family that influenced her love for art and culture from a young age. With both parents as artists who encouraged experimentation, Morgan took up mediums such as photography, drawing, and sewing. Her main creative influences are her Father’s Polish heritage and his large, geometric paintings and sculptures reminiscent of his life in Detroit working in the trades. Her Mother’s photography and drawings of summers spent in Jamaica and their family’s long heritage on the Island shaped Morgan’s enthusiasm for the tropics, color, and vibrant living. Therefore, Geometric is an example of Morgan’s ability to merge the creative arts, social justice, and fashion into a social business. That is why the original designs are hand-made in a sustainable manner, for which fair wages are paid. Geometric gives customers access to unique accessories that can't be found anywhere else. When she is not working on Geometric, Morgan is based in Washington D.C. and consults for the Global Partnership for Education on improving education policy and systems throughout the world.
