Gabriela Gaitan was inspired by her parents, who dedicated their lives to helping children with disabilities. In the 1980s, there were no oral health specialists for this population in Peru, leading to risky treatments. Her parents fought for the inclusion and acceptance of people with disabilities, motivating Gabriela from a young age to positively impact others’ lives through her projects and voice.
Gabriela’s journey into social entrepreneurship began while conducting a research project on individuals over 50 in her home country. She observed constant age discrimination. However, she also met many older adults who defied stereotypes with their ambitions and ongoing projects. Recognizing the challenges of violence, abandonment, and poverty faced by many older adults, she started Parlare. This social enterprise promotes productivity and income generation among low-income older adults, helping their economic independence and a better quality of life.
Her first encounter with the concept of social business was during a university course, but it wasn’t until the Y&Y Fellowship that she truly understood its impact. The Fellowship provided invaluable insights and mentorship, helping her enhance Parlare’s social impact. Gabriela values the continuous learning and personal growth that come with entrepreneurship, despite the challenges and uncertainties. She advises young social entrepreneurs to remain passionate, persistent, and committed to their purpose. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration, testing ideas, and measuring impact.
